Story Behind The Shot VW Sunset (Click to read more)
I’m not the biggest Volkswagen guy but, like most the quirkiness, they do have their place. I’m always up for a Baja Bug or a beetle laid out on the ground but I will always keep my eyes open for a Squareback. If you know you know. This little guy was in the right place at the right time. As the car show was winding down my friends were grabbing a table for some dinner, like usual I was searching for the steering wheel shot. The Beetle drew me in with some odd touches. The passengers “oh shit” handle was wrapped in twine along with the roof basket on top. It had a coke bottle opener attached to it, the surfboard all these small things that don’t cost an arm and a leg but gave it the character you’d think of when it comes to a bug.
I hunched over and the shot came together. Shooting film I was loosing shutter speed fast with how quickly the sun was going down. I really liked the depth of field I was getting so I knew changing fstops wasn’t going to happen. So I took a deep breath, let out and hit the button. I’ve been using the same camera for almost 10 years now but the crispness on the dashboard is unlike focus I’ve gotten before. The foreground has a lot to do with it but damn, this is one of those shots that sticks around. Beautiful night, sun hidden in the trees and someones cool car getting it’s time to been seen by people who appreciate it and share some stories about the VW their dad had or thats the car they learned how to drive stick in.
Shot on: Minolta SRT202 / 50mm Kodak 200
